How to win at festival games? (gun game)?

You know those cheap fun games at the fest? Th one were you get an automatic gun, and you have to shoot around a shape(star)? What is the trick behind that game? they give you a automatic gun with 100 shots, that go by very very fast. You have to shoot around a small simple star, then you win a big stuffed animal. How can i win at that, i hear you should shoot around the star, then pop it out, that never works for me. Since the star is hanging from a string, can you possibly just shoot across the top of the star so the star falls off? What exactly is the strategy in that game?
