The high E string on my guitar isn't long enough to go all the way to the tuning post?

I was restringing my friends Fender Starcaster and when I got to the high E, I noticed it was too short and couldn't go all the way to the tuning post. I have no idea what to do. Do they require a certain brand or type of strings?
